Rule of 3rds

Look at these 2 pictures below. Which one do you think looks better?




I hope you said the off centered picture! When the face (subject) is located off center it seems to be more pleasing to the eye. Artist and Painters have known about this technique for centuries and now you can use the same technique to produce your own great shots. The best way to understand the rules of 3rds is by looking at a frame and cutting into 3rds horizontally and vertically. Then place the main subject matter in one of the intersects as indicated by the red dot in the picture below.






I find this rule of 3rds works well when taking shots of peoples faces. So next time you are taking a pictures of your friends try it out yourself. Another perfect example of the rules of 3rds is the Mona Lisa. Do you notice where her face is located? It is on the top 3rds of the canvas. If the rule of 3rds is good enough for da Vinci its good enough for you and me.
