RAW or JPEG?

In the words of Ol Dirty Bastard, "Baby, I like it RAW"

This is one is really simple to answer and I don't know why it is argued about non stop in the forums.
-Do you edit the picture files afterwards with software? If so shoot RAW
-Do you just grab the picture files and just upload them to a computer/website? If so shoot in jpeg.

Simple and done!

Ok, so I'm totally new to the world of DSLR (just got a Canon 50d Friday) and have been watching your videos throughout the day so I'll have some clue what I'm doing. Right now I'm currently shooting in JPEG form because I don't know anything about RAW form. Could you give me some more info in regards to this? I understand it has to be "processed" BUT I don't know what that means or what type of software I would need to do this. I currently don't have any form of Photoshop, is that what I need? If so, would Elements work? Sorry so many questions, like I said, I'm brand spankin' new. Thanks so much, your videos have been helpful already. Have a lovely day!
